The Keto Diet

August 30, 2019

As of lately, more and more people have been taking an interest in the keto diet. On social media, this high-fat diet is a hot topic. So, it's safe to say that this diet is making its way into the mainstream, which could open new opportunities for both retailers and suppliers. Let's find out more about this amazing low carb lifestyle.

Endorsing this diet, Kardashians said that the diet offers speedy results. In fact, the keto diet is the most recent weight-loss trend. Since the start of 2019, this low-carb diet has made the headlines on a regular basis. The reason is that people want to shed those extra pounds.

The Keto Diet Trends in 2019

Low Carbs Taking the World by Storm

Although people's interest in this diet has skyrocketed lately, this low-carb diet is nothing new. In the 1920s, the keto diet was adopted in order to treat kids with drug-resistant epilepsy. With the passage of time, the diet became an effective way to lose weight.

Actually, the ketogenic diet triggers a state of ketosis where your body produces energy by burning fat instead of glucose. Your body does that by putting a restriction on the amount of glucose it can use. So, you have to reduce your consumptions of carbs significantly. In other words, if you want to follow this diet, you need to get 75% of your calories from fat instead of carbs, 5% from carbs and 20% from protein. In the same way, you don't want to have starchy carbs like pasta, rice, and bread. You mustn't have sugar, milk and most of fruits and veggies either.

If you want to maintain ketosis, make sure you avoid these foods. As soon as you have a carb-rich meal, your body will get out of ketosis. What you need to do is focus on unprocessed oils, fish, meat and high-fat dairy.

Celebrity Endorsements

So, the question is why this restrictive diet is getting so much popularity these days, especially on social media and newspapers? In simple terms, it all happened due to a celebrity endorsement. For instance, the diet has been endorsed by Kardashians and LeBron. This is one of the main reasons why consumer habits have changed in favor of this low-carb diet.

At We Are Social, Nurfaah Mattar, a senior research analyst said that the credit of the popularity of this diet goes to nutrition experts, doctors and diet app accounts. In a pool that involved over 2,000 consumers, it was found that at least 30% of consumers made their diet choices based on celebrity endorsement.

Chase Buckle of Globalwebindex says that the celebrity endorsement is a powerful force. Over 20% of UK citizens between the ages of 16 and 34 buy product based on the ads they see on social media, said Buckle.

Now, this trend is making its way into the mainstream. According to another Harris Interactive pool, we found that 35% of consumers consider the ketogenic diet as an effective diet. In January, the interest in the diet increased by 3 times than the previous year. In fact, on Google, the keto diet has 6 times more searches compared to the Atkins diet or paleo diet.

Keto in Grocery

Currently, we see a lot of new keto-friendly products in grocery stores. However, Ocado published a new page on this diet and dedicated it to keto only in August. On this section, you can see a variety of products that keto dieters can use, such as pork snacks, low-carb bread, and avocado oil mayonnaise. According to the online retailer, searchers for keto products on its site got doubled in 2018.

According to the director of The Brand Nursery, the industry of manufactured and processed food will find it hard to embrace keto as the diet includes fresh fruits like cheese, eggs, and meat. Only a few categories can accommodate keto and manufacturers will have to spend a good deal of money to introduce keto-friendly varieties of most food products.
